The assault by harry mulisch5/31/2023 Every story is interesting and unique, and I am particularly fond of memoirs from the Hunger Winter. There are many stories about World War II and, although I’ve read only a handful, I find this one to be the best one in regards to style. As his past visits his present life, Anton discovers what truly happened that night, and he attempts to come to terms with the way his life played out. Anton tries to forget this tragedy and move on with his life, however, the more he tries to forget, the more destiny forces him to face what happened. His family falls victim to an injustice while the Nazi military is still in the Netherlands. The Assault, or De Aanslag in its original Dutch title, tells the story of Anton Steenwijk right at the end of the World War II and his life after the war. Having read his novel The Assault, I understand why. When I’ve asked people to tell me who they consider the best Dutch writer to be, Harry Mulisch has been everyone’s answer.

No loss is permanent, because nothing is permanent, ever.” The idea that if you keep playing, you could win. It’s the possibility of infinite rebirth, infinite redemption. “It’s tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. Spanning thirty years, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Venice Beach, California, and lands in between and far beyond, Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won’t protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. For a moment, she pretends she hasn’t heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. It is a love story, but not one you have read before. Sam and Sadie-two college friends, often in love, but never lovers-become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality.

Pull me under by kelly luce5/31/2023 The novel's illuminating and palpably atmospheric descriptions of Japan and its culture, as well as its elegantly dynamic structure, call to mind both Ruth Ozeki's A Tale for the Time Being and David Guterson's Snow Falling on Cedars. There she is forced to confront her past in ways she never imagined, pushing herself, her relationships with her husband and daughter, and her own sense of who she is to the brink. Her father's death, along with a mysterious package that arrives on her doorstep in Boulder, Colorado, spurs her to return to Japan for the first time in twenty years. Rio, born Chizuru Akitani, is the Japanese American daughter of the revered violinist Hiro Akitani, a living national treasure in Japan and a man to whom Rio hasn't spoken since she left her home country for the United States and a new identity after her violent crime. Pull Me Under tells the story of Rio Silvestri, who, when she was twelve years old, fatally stabbed a school bully. From one of the most imaginative minds in fiction comes this searing new novel.
